Mid-Year Check-In: Evaluating & Revising Goals Through Meaningful Conversations

Mid-Year Check-In: Evaluating & Revising Goals Through Meaningful Conversations

Dear Colleagues,

Mid-year check-ins are a unique opportunity to assess progress toward achieving your performance goals and to focus on your continued development. Evolving or shifting priorities may also impact your goals. The ACE Performance Management process emphasizes Evaluating and Revising (ER) components of the SMARTER goals, which appropriately ensures goals are achievable and relevant. Mid-year check-ins should occur before Monday, March 31.

Why Focus on Evaluating & Revising?

Performance is not just about achieving a set goal — it is about continuous learning, adjusting to new challenges, and ensuring alignment with changing priorities. This check-in is a structured opportunity to have a meaningful conversation about your role and contributions.
Evaluate
  • Are your goals still relevant based on shifting priorities?
  • What progress has been made? What challenges have emerged?
  • Are there key contributions or accomplishments that should be highlighted?
Revise
  • Do goals need to be adjusted to reflect changes in responsibilities of team objectives?
  • Are there opportunities to expand learning and development within your role?
  • How can feedback from past discussions be incorporated into ongoing growth?

How to Prepare for Your Mid-Year Check-In

  • Evaluate your SMART(ER) goals and assess progress since the beginning of the cycle.
  • Revise goals where necessary to reflect evolving priorities.
  • Engage openly with your manager and seize opportunities to focus on your professional development and growth opportunities.

Manager Expectations

Managers are accountable for providing actionable feedback and determining whether employees are on track to achieve this year’s goals. The year-end performance category should never be a surprise, and it is important to confirm when an employee is on track to achieve their goals during the mid-year check-in. As a manager, it is equally important to communicate when an employee’s performance is not on track and to provide actionable feedback. If you need to address a performance concern, contact your HR Business Partner for guidance.

Mid-Year Resources

We’ve created a dedicated resource tab on our website for mid-year reviews, providing valuable tools for employees and managers. Under this section, you’ll find the Enhanced ACE Performance Management Guide for Supervisors & Managers, Career Conversation Guides, and LinkedIn Learning resources to support your ACE discussions.
