The TR@TC Residency Experience

TR@TC participants choose one of thirteen possible program pathways that lead to certification in a specialization area (e.g., Teaching Students with Disabilities) and a content area (e.g., Mathematics) or to two specialization areas (i.e., Teaching Students with Disabilities + Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Program pathway options include:

Student Coursework

Semester 1 (Autumn)

Teaching Residents complete foundational coursework that introduces foundational elements of teaching and learning that are specific to the selected program pathway. Residents have opportunities to participate in TC-sponsored events including lectures, book talks, conferences, and more.

Residents are invited to attend a series of guided observations hosted by TR@TC that introduce new residents to different kinds of NYC public schools.

Fieldwork

Semester 2 (Spring)

Teaching Residents continue with their program-pathway coursework.

At the beginning of the semester, TR@TC are inducted into a residency cohort. The group participates in their first TR@TC Residency Core Course that is co-taught by the TR@TC Co-Director and a veteran NYC public school teacher. Residents engage fieldwork at a TR@TC partnership school where they work 1:1 with and learn from a middle/high school student.

Summer Semester

Semester 3 (Summer)

Teaching Residents complete 2-4 program pathway courses from mid-May through mid-August (Summer A&B Semesters).

Teaching Residents participate in a TR@TC Residency Core Course (Summer A & B) where they are introduced to elements of inquiry- and project-based learning. They work alongside NYC public school teachers to enact these models of instruction with middle/high school students.

Residency Year

Entry into the Residency

In August during a week-long Mentor Teacher/Teaching Resident Orientation, Teaching Residents spend time with their Mentor Teachers, who are classroom teachers of record in TR@TC partnership schools, preparing for the coming school year.

In September, the Teaching Residency begins and extends through the full NYC public school academic year. Teaching Residents spend four days/week (Monday-Thursday) co-planning and co-teaching their Mentor Teacher. The Teaching Residents' work in the classroom mirrors that of their Mentor Teachers and includes elements such as instruction, planning, assessment, building student supports, etc. The learning and development of Teaching Residents is further supported by Residency Supervisors, who visit, observe, and offer substantive feedback to the Teaching Resident throughout the residency year.

Residency Year

Semester 4 (Autumn)

In this semester, Teaching Residents complete 2-4 program pathway courses.

Teaching Residents participate in a year-long TR@TC Core Residency course that is designed to integrate what is happening in the classroom with academic coursework. This integrating seminar happens on Fridays each week. Among other things, this semester's course experiences include participation in Education Rounds a structured learning experience where residents spend time in the classrooms of colleagues in the residency cohort.

Students in Class

Semester 5 (Spring)

In this semester, Teaching Residents complete 2-4 program pathway courses.

The TR@TC Core Residency Course (Integrating Seminar) continues through the spring. Among other things, this semester's course experiences include the opportunity for Teaching Residents to work with the TR@TC Induction Coordinator to prepare to be certified and secure positions in high-need New York City public schools where they will be supported and sustained as well-prepared beginning teachers.

While most Teaching Residents graduate at the end of the spring semester, they continue in their residency placements and attend the TR@TC Core Residency Course until the end of the New York City Public Schools academic school year (end of June).
